Zofran is part of a class of medications known as serotonin receptor-3 antagonists. Certain medical treatments can lead to feelings of sickness or actual vomiting (nausea and vomiting) - Zofran can help prevent these symptoms.
Zofran is an antiemetic that functions by decreasing the activity of the vagus nerve, which typically stimulates the vomiting center in the medulla oblongata, and blocking serotonin receptors that chemotherapy activates. It does not affect motion sickness or interact with dopaminergic and muscarinic receptors.
Zofran is utilized to prevent nausea and vomiting linked to various causes: conditions induced by chemotherapy; hyperemesis gravidarum during pregnancy; cyclic vomiting syndrome; and postoperative situations.
